Yes, the word “self-awareness” is a bit of a mouthful. It is easy to use the word to convey the idea of “awareness” in the sense of “knowing” or “having knowledge”. But the truth is, awareness doesn’t automatically mean “knowing”. And I do not mean “having knowledge” in the sense of “knowing about”.

I am not going to argue that the word itself has to be used in this way. But if you are going to use the word “self-awareness,” then it should be used in that manner. In the same way, you should use the word “knowing” when talking about something you are actually “aware of.

When you are not aware of something, it is not knowing. It is simply being unaware. This, however, can still be defined in another way. You can be aware and yet not know. But you can also be aware of something and not know about it. So, when you are aware of the fact that you like the color red, you cannot possibly also be aware that you like the color blue.

That is the case with knowing and not knowing. If something is not known, you simply don’t know. But when you know that something is not known, you can still know about it for certain. In the same manner, you should use the word knowing when talking about something you are actually aware of.

Knowing something is different than knowing a fact. Certain facts can be known while other facts remain unknown. For instance, you can know that something is not known. But that is not knowledge. For instance, you can be aware of the fact that something is not known. But that is not knowledge. So when you say something is not known, you are not referring to knowledge but rather awareness.

The same goes for things the Internet is supposed to provide. In the same manner, you should give a broad definition of what you mean by word knowledge. Words like “knowing” and “knowing a fact” can be used interchangeably. For instance, you can know you’re sick. However, you shouldn’t be using the word “sick” because that implies a condition. You should instead use the word “ill”.

So when we say that something is not known, we are not referring to knowledge but rather awareness. We would then have to specify what we mean by knowing. But if we say something is not known, we are not referring to awareness but rather knowledge. As such, we would then have to use another word to describe the act of knowing. For instance, we can know were hungry. We do not mean we hunger because that implies a condition.

Ill is a word that is used in many contexts. When we have a condition, we have to specify what we mean by knowing if we want to refer to a certain state. But when we say something is ill, we do not refer to a condition but to awareness. So when we say something is ill, we simply mean that we are not aware of the condition.

Such would be the case when we say we are not aware of what is happening here. Similarly, if we have an illness, we do not have to specify what condition we are in. Instead, we would just mean we don’t have any idea.

When we say we have an illness, we mean we don’t know we have an illness. The same goes for our condition here.
